Chennai School Holiday Calendar 2026

The following table summarises the holidays listed in the reference calendar. Dates should be checked against the applicable official notification before publication.

Festival dates and school closures must be confirmed against official notifications. Some dates may be subject to changes or additional announcements.

Major School Vacation Periods in Chennai

Alongside public holidays, parents should check the Tamil Nadu academic calendar 2026-27 and their school’s own schedule for longer breaks.

These dates are planning references and should not be treated as a confirmed, uniform schedule for every school in Chennai. Government, aided, matriculation, CBSE, ICSE and international schools may follow different calendars.

Important Festival Holidays in Chennai

Pongal School Holidays Chennai 2026

Pongal is one of Tamil Nadu’s most significant harvest festivals. The holiday period may include Pongal, Thiruvalluvar Day and Uzhavar Thirunal.

Parents should confirm the full Pongal vacation period, the last working day and the reopening date with their child’s school. This is especially important when arranging family travel or activities during the Pongal school holidays Chennai 2026.

Summer Vacation 2026

Summer vacation is often the longest school break of the year. Families can use this period for travel, sports, reading, creative activities and rest.

Before booking a trip, check the school’s final working day, vacation dates and reopening schedule. Some schools may also provide holiday assignments or optional summer programmes.

Diwali Holidays Chennai Schools 2026

Deepavali, also called Diwali, is a major festival observed by many schools in Chennai. The length of the break may vary depending on the school calendar and the official holiday announcement.

Check whether your school has announced additional vacation days around the festival. Do not assume every school will follow the same Deepavali schedule.

Christmas and Year-End Holidays

Some schools schedule a break around Christmas and the end of December, while others may follow their regular academic timetable apart from designated holidays.

Parents should confirm the last working day of December and the reopening date in January 2027.

Do All Chennai Schools Follow the Same Holiday Calendar?

No. Although schools may observe many of the same public holidays, vacation periods and academic schedules can differ.

Parents comparing school options should also understand the differences between government and private schools in India. School type can affect fees, facilities, admission processes and the academic calendar a family needs to review.
